With her brother, Jeremy, Annie must navigate the broken streets of San Francisco amidst the destruction and confusion created by the natural disaster.

Susanna wrote this book as her Master's degree thesis. It is supported and promoted by the Wisconsin M.S. Society

The 1962 Green Bay Packers are still considered one of the most successful teams in the history of the National Football League. the book examines how the team was built, exploring how four of the five assistants on Lombardi's coaching staff went on to become head coaches. The team was rich with personalities, from the glamour conscious Hourning to the emotional Nitschke to the determined Starr. Of course, the strongest personality was Lombardi who shaped these many unique individuals and talents into a team that changed the game forever. The Packers of this era won five championships in seven years, including the first tow Super Bowls creating a dynasty in the smallest market in professional sports.

Loreen Niewenhuis, who chronicled her trek around Lake Michigan in her book, “A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach” will discuss her journey and sign books on Saturday, July 16, 11:00 at LaDeDa Books and Beans, 1624 New York Avenue in Manitowoc.
The book explores both the geology of the lake and the measure of a person – a woman, married, and mother of two sons who joined her on part of the walk. However, most of the walk was done solo – an adventure in discovery of self and place.

Niewenhuis conveys a sense of the magnitude of the lake she loves, a place so elemental to the states which form its shores.

Day by day, from a ground-level perspective, the book explores the natural and human history of Lake Michigan, and raises important questions about preserving our wild places and protecting fragile ecosystems. .

Loreen Niewenhuis grew up in Michigan and has lived there most of her life. She pursued a life of science, getting a Bachelor, then an MS degree. She worked in various aspects of that world including a hospital laboratory, basic animal research, and a bone marrow transplant group.
While taking a break from this work to raise her young sons, Loreen began writing fiction. This evolved into a passion and she returned to school to get her MFA from Spalding University.
In 2009, her short story collection, Scar Tissue, was a finalist for the Flannery O’Connor Award.

Loreen is currently working on a novel, Tumor Board, set in the medical world.

Joan will read and discuss her new children’s book “Airplanes in the Garden: Monarch Butterflies Take Flight”.

Bonnie, a young girl who adopts two monarch caterpillars in her family garden, lets her imagination fly as she follows them through metamorphosis.

The book includes an informative section with maps of monarch migration and helpful tips to grow a butterfly friendly garden.

Joan Z. Calder, author, horticulturist, and garden designer, manages the greenhouse at the University of California, Santa Barbara where she nurtures a butterfly garden. She travels the U.S. to educate the public about monarch migration and the importance of conserving their habitat.

“Airplanes in the Garden” was illustrated by award-winning water colorist, Cathy Quiel.

Books are currently available at LaDeDa and will be available on the day of Joan's visit.

In 2009, Loreen walked completely around Lake Michigan. this book chronicles that journey, a 1,000 mile walk around the world's fifth largest lake.

The book explores both the geology of the lake and the measure of person - a woman, married, mother of two sons. Even though her sons joined her on parts of the journey, most was done solo, an adventure in discovery of self and place.

Loreen and her brother, Phil, spent time here as they passed through Manitowoc. We shared a relaxing dinner with them, along with several employees and friends. In addition to this book, Loreen is close to publishing a medical based novel, "Tumor Board". She generously shared an early draft with me, and I found it impossible to put down...reading most of it on my way to Cedarburg one Sunday. (Nope, I wasn't driving!)

Phil, an accomplished musician and composer, may accompany Loreen on this visit as well.

Please come. I know you will be fascinated by this amazing story.

Meet Frankie and her Biographer

Frankie, the Walk 'N Roll Dog, and her owner, Barbara Techel, will appear at LaDeDa Books & Beans, 1624 New York Ave. Saturday, October 9 at 10:30 A.M. The presentation will include a brief talk followed by questions and book signing. Books are available now at LaDeDa.

When Frankie ruptured a disk in her back and ultimately was custom-fitted for a doggie wheelchair, author Barbara Techel was so inspired watching her persevere that she followed her heart and wrote a book series about her dachshund, Frankie.

As children (and adults) follow Frankie’s adventures, they learn valuable life lessons such as having a positive attitude when facing challenges, giving back to others despite obstacles, being compassionate toward all beings, responsibility in caring for animals, and not worrying what others think of you, to name just a few.

Barbara is a sought after speaker at schools, libraries, and organizations for her uplifting and encouraging presentations. She has received numerous awards for her book series, and her story has been featured in major publications such as Woman's World and books published by Tarcher (division of Penguin) Publishing and New World Library. Barbara is a member of Independent Book Publishers Association, Midwest Book Publishers Association, and Dog Writer’s of America Association. Techel’s books include Frankie, the Walk ‘N Roll Dog, and Frankie, the Walk ‘N Roll therapy Dog Visits Libby’s House.

Although many young Americans are highly trained to be skilled soldiers, they have little or no training in dealing with the realities of combat.

They have not been trained to deal with the consequences of war, namely psychological injuries, deaths of close friends, and the betrayal of what is morally right.

His (Vnuk's) youth was cut short when he was drafted to fight in Viet Nam. While training for war he made an agonizing decision to go AWOL because his conscience was telling him that something was wrong. Rather than dishonoring his parents he returned to the Army and in 1967 became a reluctant warrior.

He returned ... in 2007 as a volunteer teacher and made peace with Viet Nam.

Author, Jennifer Kitchell, and re-purposed paper artist Chris Kuck will be at LaDeDa Books & Beans, Saturday, May 8th. Kitchell will read from her novel Girl with Skirt of Stars beginning at 11:00 A.M. followed by question and answer session. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Kitchell’s mystery features Lilly Chischilly, an attorney working for the Navajo Nation’s Historic Preservation Department. Lilli Chischilly's world is one in which she is continually seeking the spiritual balance at the heart of her culture; she stands with one foot firmly planted in the world of her Navajo people, and the other in the white world where her legal skills and deep understanding of both cultures have put her in the political spotlight.

A murdered Navajo grandfather, symbolically marked, is found in the strange landscape of the hoodoos. It is up to Lilly to find her way to the center of the labyrinth. The debut novel carries readers on a heart-pounding journey through Navajo mysticism, political manipulation and the workings of a twisted mind obsessed with an historical event that could reach out from the past to change the future.

Jennifer Kitchell was born near the Canadian border. She has a PhD in Geology and has been a professor of paleontology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan.

Teen author Justin DeCleene, will speak and sign books at LaDeDa Books & Beans, Saturday, Feb 27, from 10:30-12:00.

The fact that he's published a book didn't quite hit 15-year-old Justin DeCleene until he saw a few classmates reading it. DeCleene, a sophomore at Bay Port High School, turned his five-day stay in a hospital for a kidney infection in 2008 into a fictionalized novel "Medical Adventures" and got it self-published.

Finding the right publisher and one who would consider a novel from a then 13-year-old wasn't easy. In fact, from start to finish, the nearly 80-page novel took a year before it went into print, much of that time spent researching the best ways to get it published.

Working several jobs, including mowing lawns in the summer, DeCleene earned enough to publish the book. But he didn't write the book for the money - DeCleene said he makes more money cutting grass than for each book - but to share his experience with a common infection that still keeps him under the care of a specialist.

The illness began in January 2008 with a series of bloody noses. "I'm used to it because of allergies, so I didn't think anything of it," said DeCleene. But unlike nosebleeds commonly associated with allergies, they didn't stop. He soon started to show other symptoms - vomiting and puffiness in his face - that concerned his parents enough to take him to the doctor. A test for strep came back positive, and DeCleene was diagnosed with glomerulonephritis, a kidney disease caused by the bacteria.

Told immediately to go to the emergency room, even though he wasn't in any pain, DeCleene spent five days in an intensive care unit hooked up to an IV and catheter. Keeping a journal while being treated, DeCleene initially intended to enter a novel contest with his writings. But after writing a few pages, he realized it could be more than that.

Eventually published by AuthorHouse, a self-publisher in Indiana, the book is a thinly veiled fictionalized version of his experiences with a glossary of medical terms.

Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

Adam Morantez...singer, songwriter....7:30-?

Don't miss this talented, all around good guy. We are pleased to offer this special pass-the-hat performance here at LaDeDa.

Ever since Adam was little, singing in the shower, he knew he was destined to be a singer/songwriter. After graduating from an arts high school, Adam went on to study music at ST. Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota. Adam played with a Twin Cities band called Bookreader, before leaving to focus on his solo career.

In 2008, Adam moved to Manitowoc where he lives with his author/artist wife, Dani, and daughter, Aimee. He credits his wife and daughter for being his muses, inspiring him to write over sixty songs. Adam says he believes in "standing up for human rights," and "keeping it local."

I hope to see you Saturday, Feb. 27th, to support one or both of these artists.
